WE ARE YOUNG, WILD AND FREE - Review
YOUNG WILD FREE CAFE, SATYANIKETAN
Satyaniketan is now overburdened with responsibility. Given that it has its twin in GTB Nagar at North Campus, Satyaniketan has become the hub for eateries in South Campus of the University of Delhi. Everyday, thousands of students walk through the lanes of the market. New eateries pop up every other day and some fail miserably, but this one has made its presence known by probably combining everything good about the other cafes under one roof.
THE AMBIENCE
Young Wild Free Cafe is a tad bit hard to find, given that it is on the first floor right at the end of the lane at Satyaniketan. A narrow stairway that leads up to a slide up door is really underwhelming. The stairway leading up the cafe is squeaky and wobbles when you step on it, making you think you're going to fall. EXCITING EVEN BEFORE YOU ENTER! The cafe is rocking good high-bass music and is well lit with a yellow tone to the place. The walls are covered in many different things. One has a pretty cool graffiti and another is plain wood with some shelves. But the best part about the cafe is the section that we sat in. Mattresses on the ground around a table which housed SOCKETS! FINALLY! GIMME THAT E-JUICE. There are books, board games and cards at your disposal, provided by the cafe. So there isn't really any scope of boredom throughout your stay at Young Wild Free Cafe.
THE FOOD
THE DRINKS
- Litchi Mojito: A refreshing classic with a twist of litchi. The litchi flavour did let out a hint but was hard to spot. Didn't really add to the drink.
- Double Chocolate Brownie Shake: Aah. A crowd pleaser and a favourite of EVERYONE. And topped off with a heavy chocolate brownie. The shake also had brownie blended into it, which made it nice and thick.
- Blueberry Banana Smoothie: A personal favourite of mine because it isn't the usual chocolate flavoured drink. This one had a banana base and a blast of berries to cut through the richness of the Banana. Streaks of the blueberry made this smoothie a tart contrast to the other drinks. RECOMMENDED!
THE MEAL
- Chinese Bhel: Recommended by the staff, the chinese bhel is nothing like I've had before. It is equivalent to a chopsuey, without the gravy to liquify the dish. The flavours across the chinese bhel were familiar and had nice recall factor, but the crisp fried noodles added the novelty!
- Young Wild Free Pasta: We thought we'd give a try to this namesake pasta and boy, were we happy. Well cooked pasta in a cheese based sauce, served with a side of toasted garlic bread.
- Butter Chicken Pizza: Now, whenever I've been to any cafe that promises to serve me a good old pizza with THIN CRUST, I expect them to be loaded with cheese and the base to provide just a platform for the toppings to shine. But every place, other than the usual Dominos/Pizza Hut, has disappointed me. HOWEVER, when the Butter Chicken Pizza came forward at Young Wild Free Cafe, I was in love. Because as soon as you tried picking up one slice of the cheese-pie, it would pull with it long strings of cheese up to 6 inches high! DAMN. And not only that, the base of this pizza was thin-crust, but it had some depth to it. The flavour and the cook on the base was exceptional. I'd probably go there for the pizzas alone.
- Nachos with Salsa: Just as you'd expect, Nachos topped with cheese served with a side of Sour Creme and THE BEST SALSA YOU'VE EVER HAD. The freshness of the salsa was brilliant. Popped the dish to a new level!
- Chicken and Chips: The classic British dish, Fish and Chips, has been given a new take by Young Wild Free Cafe in the form of Chicken and Chips. The chips being the same, fried potato wedges and the Chicken is fried chicken. The crisp on the chicken was good, but it lacked any volume. The pieces were too thin to carry any taste of the chicken. Which was a bit disappointing. But for any fried food lovers, this was perfect!
THE VERDICT
Young Wild Free Cafe justifies its name pretty well. It is the right spot for any college reunions or get-togethers with the amount of activities it provides and a chilled out sitting arrangement. Some dishes on the menu are worth a revisit, but some can be avoided. If they are able to fix these little knocks (and their staircase), then the place would be PERFECT!
