AUTHENTIC ITALIAN - CAFFE TONINO - Review

CAFFE TONINO, ONE HORIZON CENTER, GURGAON

With the latest boom in infrastructure and city planning, Gurgaon has become the prime location for any and every high-end restaurant. The eateries at Gurgaon offer the world to the palate of students, working class people and entrepreneurs alike. It has been difficult to make a mark on this ever expanding city. However, one eatery in particular has been turning heads left, right and center.

Caffe Tonino at One Horizon Center is closest to the Sector 42-43 Metro Station on the Gurgaon Rapid Metro. The ever so grand One Horizon Center is home to many fine-dining cafés but Caffe Tonino offers a beautiful overall dining experience to the customers from the moment you enter. The beautiful fencing around the outdoor dining area, the decor of the tables with bright yellow tablecloths, Scott Bradlee's Post Modern Jukebox playing modern songs in the tune of yesteryear. Everything takes you to the fine settint of Tonino in Italy. The service is fantastic, with every server smiling and serving us our food and drinks. There is an in-house wood-fired oven, where the chef makes us our pizzas right in-front of the customers! People should know how what they're eating is made.

THE MEAL

There was real cohesion with the flow of the meal. The servers assisted us with the proper way of eating Italian cuisine. Every course serves a purpose and is a prelude to the next one! Throughout out meal, we were served a bread basket with assorted, fresh, breads accompanied by a tomato salsa and some olive mash. The perfect way to proceed!

Now, there was some variety on offer with the mocktail menu. But I ordered the one that appealed the most to me, the one called "Monalisa" and I don't regret my choice! The Monalisa was a fusion of tangy cranberry and earthy beetroot. The red delight was refreshing and kick-started the meal well!

Now, before the heavy hitters of Italian meals, the first course is the Antipasti. Bitesized portions of fine flavours. Caffe Tonino served us:
• Arancini di Formaggi, which translates to Arancini with Cheese. The fried balls of cheese were stuffed with red cheddar and served on a bed of tomato chilli jam and tzatziki.
• Baked Potatoes: Half potatoes, stuffed Thyme Chicken and topped with loads of cheese. A treat for the eyes and the mouth.
• Bruschetta Pomodoro: A simple toasted bruschetta topped with fresh tomato and feta!

When you're at Caffe Tonino, and you're short of cash, make sure you try their Pizzas. They are to die for. But I don't want to die for them. I want to live, fall in love with them, marry them and have little human-pizza babies with thin crust and plenty of toppings. I don't know what I'd do without them. These pizzas were beyond the feasibility and comprehension of the human mind. The margarita with dollops of mozzarella, and my favourite, the pepperoni with olives. Aah. So good. I can imagine our wedding going down in Bora Bora.

Finally, we settled down for main course, which was a grilled fish with butter, grilled vegetables and a mushroom risotto with cream. A good way to fill yourself up.

At the end of the day, we opted for what seemed like the best desserts on offer. The Tiramisu and the Chocolate Lasagna served with Vanilla Icecream. The Lasagna was impeccable as it played with flavours, textures and temperature! The warm lasagna went perfectly well with the cold icecream. The contrast was brilliant. However, the Tiramisu stole the show with its balance of flavours! The espresso in the mascarpone cheesecake gave it that bitter tint you expect from coffee while the smooth cream gave that coffee-kick a soothing rest.

THE VERDICT

Caffe Tonino is an all round experience. It takes you on a journey through Italy with its sights and sounds perfectly curated to match the cuisine. If in the vicinity, visit Caffe Tonino and embrace Italy.
